Introduction

Dr. Lily Yen arrived in Vancouver from Taiwan, an adventurous fourteen-year-old, unfortunately speaking barely any English. Being behind in all academic subjects except math, she was encouraged by her teachers to try Waterloo Math Contests (now called Canadian Mathematics Competition). Soon after that, mathematics became a passion which she pursued until her first child was born.

Even though she took a twelve-year sabbatical from math research while raising three children, she never stopped teaching mathematics. Teaching math for elementary school teachers at SFU over twenty years ago inspired her to expand classes in her tutoring centre from high school to elementary school mathematics, in order to understand first-hand the challenges children face, and to help them overcome such challenges.

With over twenty years of experience as a post secondary educator, a math tutor, and a mother of three, Dr. Yen looks forward to sharing her experience with parents to help them guide their children's individual math journey.
